Want to know more about sugar gliders? Their scientific name is ‘Petaurus breviceps’. That is quite a mouth full, isn’t it? ‘Sugar glider’ is a lot easier and more fun to say.

These cute and soft little animals are not rodents, they are actually marsupials. They love to hang out in pouches. A mommy sugar glider will carry her babies inside her pouch until they get old enough and strong enough to ride on her back. Baby sugar gliders are called joeys.

Sugar gliders are from Australia and Indonesia but you can now find them in many other countries as pets. Some countries and states do not allow sugar gliders as pets, so checking local laws and regulations is very important before you decide to have one as a pet.

Sugar gliders like to eat just about everything. They can be very picky eaters if you let them. In the wild, some of their favorite foods are bugs, fruits, nectars and small birds and lizards.

Sugar gliders also like having friends. In the wild, they live in colonies with lots of other sugar gliders. As pets, they need at least one friend to keep them company, talk to (yep, they talk to each other!) and help them with their grooming. A single sugar glider will be very sad and lonely without a friend to play with them all night.

Sugar gliders as pets need a lot of attention, love, care and space. You need a very large cage to keep your sugar glider friends happy. They also need a special diet to replicate what they eat in the wild, so they don’t get sick.

We hope you learned something new today, and will enjoy coloring your very own sugar glider!
